Description/AbstractEuxenite and priorite are considered as 2 minerals of varying compositions, containing Y, Nb, Ti, and O; in addition, rare earths, Th, U, Ca, and Fe may also be present in form of isomorphous admixtures. Euxenite is isomorphous with an artificial material. YNbTiO/sub 6/, prepared by sintering the equivalent oxides Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, Nb/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and 2TiO/su b 2/ at 1100 deg C; priorite is isomorphous with the similar CeNbTiO/sub 6/, also prepared by sintering. Further study revealed that the mixture having the composition of YNbTiO/sub 6/ has 2 polymorphic modifications, one corresponding to euxenite, the other to priorite. The artificial priorite was prepared by a hydrothermal method at 350 deg C, transforming the equivalent oxides into the hydroxide form; the artificial euxenite was prepared by calcining, as mentioned above. There is no true chemical difference, only crystallographic difference between the 2 minerals. There are natural euxenites with Th> U content and priorites with U > Th content. (TTT)
