Since 1984, the 2-MW Ford nuclear reactor, University of Michigan, has operated with low enriched (<20%) uranium aluminide (UAl{sub x}) fuel. Elements are 18-plate, materials test reactor (MTR) type, each containing 167 g {sup 235}U. To extend fuel lifetime, it may be possible to use elements that contain up to 225 g {sup 235}U. Burnable poison may be needed to limit power peaking. The burnable poison under consideration is boron carbide powder uniformly dispersed in the fuel meat.
