Description/AbstractThe reaction between aluminium and nitrogen was investigated in detail using NaF, KHF/sub 2/, MgF/sub 2/, CaF/sub 2/, PbF/sub 2/, BiF/sub 3/, AlF/sub 3/ , and CeF/sub 3/ as catalysts. The optimum conditions for the formation of aluminium nitride were found to be: Catalyst = 5% KHF/sub 2/, temperature = 1000 deg C, and heating time = 3 hours. Under these conditions, the product contained 94 to 96% of aluminium nitride. A method is also described for the preparation of aluminium nitride of low carbon content. (auth)
