| Description/Abstract | The decimal variations (d) of relative atomic weights (M) in the form d = Mi - A + 1, are graphically represented as a function of the mass number A by 5 linear segments. The equations of these segments are statistically determined, and a list of d values established for A between 3 and 240. The values of the empirical relative atomic weights M/sub (A) obtained by the formula M = A + d - 1 for mass of different isotopes and the values recommended by the Nuclear Data Tables'' for the abundance of different stable natural isotopes correspond satisfactorily with the relative atomic weights, except for hydrogen and helium. The relative influence of proton and neutron number is very little and, in most practical cases, the method consequently presents sufficient precision for the determination of any isotope mass. The importance of the binding energy is shown. (auth) |
