| Description/Abstract | The Turkish electricity industry introduced the BOT (build-operate-transfer) model in 1984, as part of an electricity law that opened the doors to competition from private power producers. The BOT concept was seized by developers as an innovative way to finance infrastructure projects in a variety of markets. Ironically, the model never achieved fruition in Turkey - until now. As Turkey`s first BOT project, the Marmara plant holds promise as a model for future projects. In dealing with issues involving getting government clearances, site acquisition and guarantees for financing, there has been strong support from the government. The successful financing of the Marmara project will be an important milestone, in that it establishes a proven BOT model for future development in Turkey. |
