February 2012

Since June of 2008, the DOE Data Explorer has been helping users find and link to DOE's vast collection of data and non-text information. The records in the DDE database are prepared by OSTI staff and based on information found at the websites where these collections reside. In 2011, OSTI also began inviting data owners and/or data holders to submit bibliographic information about individual datasets or datastreams to the Energy Citations Database (ECD). As a member of and a registering agency for DataCite, OSTI now assigns Digital Object Identifiers to these individual datasets. The assigning and registration of a DOI for every dataset submitted is a free service provided by OSTI to enhance DOE's management of this important resource.

To accommodate this expanded scope of activity, a new functionality has been added to the DOE Data Explorer. It allows you to, with one search, retrieve results from both DDE and ECD. View the collections retrieved from the DDE database by your search word or phrase and then, with the click of a button, view the relevant dataset records that were retrieved from ECD by that same search. Toggle back and forth between the two lists of search results, and link out to a collection or to an individual dataset. DOIs for the datasets are, of course, included in the citations.

September 2011

Approximately 200 individual dataset records from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Archive were added to the Energy Citations Database (ECD) in September. To find these datasets in ECD, simply access the ECD homepage at http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/, click on Fielded Search, then from the "Select Type" picklist, choose "Dataset." To limit the search to ARM datasets only, also type ARM in the Research Org. search box.

August 2011

Individual datasets can now be identified to OSTI in order to receive a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). OSTI provides this free service through its membership in DataCite. The data records are indexed in Energy Citations Database (ECD) and will also become available in DOE Data Explorer in the near future. Until that time, the dataset records in ECD will be noted here by OSTI ID and by the dataset's DOI.

OSTI ID 1021460: Balloon-borne Sounding System (BBSS): Vaisala-processed winds, pressure, temperature, and RH (DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5439/1021460). The DOI identifies a datastream in the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Archive at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

July 2010

The Comprehensive Epidemiological Data Resource (CEDR) has been relocated from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), where it will now be maintained. ORISE is managed for DOE by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. The URL for the new homepage is https://www.orau.gov/cedr/. CEDR is a DOE public-use repository of data from occupational and environmental health studies of workers at DOE facilities and of nearby community residents. It is funded by DOE's Office of Health, Safety and Security.

The affected records in the DOE Data Explorer have been changed to link to the new location. Those records are: DDE00041, DDE00042, DDE00043, and DDE00149.

New citations for July are:

  • Hydrogen Data Book from the Hydrogen Analysis Resource Center (DDE00444)
  • Power Technologies Energy Data Book (DDE00445)

In the interest of providing better retrieval for the hundreds of video presentations available from DOE's activities, several DOE Data Explorer (DDE) records will be revised over the next few months. When one record describes a collection of several hundred videos, it is not practical to list the title of each presentation and the name of the presenter. However, this is the information that most people will use when searching. By revising one DDE record into several, thus breaking the collection into smaller "chunks," it becomes possible to list the specific information for each video. Presenters will be able to search on their own names and search terms will now be run against individual presentation titles. The first collection to be split across several records for this enhanced retrievability is the Advanced Photon Source Colloquium Series. The APS Colloquium Series is now referenced by year in records DDE00448 through DDE00452.

June 2010

The DOE Data Explorer is now a Science Accelerator resource! This means the DOE Data Explorer is one of the key DOE databases being searched by the powerful Science Accelerator search engine. Type a word or phrase into the Science Accelerator search box and retrieve data collections and multimedia along with technical reports, journal literature, patent documents, software, ...and much more.

Check out the search options on the Science Accelerator Advanced Search page. You can search the listed databases and websites in any combination of your choice or all at once. Notice how cool it is to see DOE Data Explorer in that list, and then let Science Accelerator go to work for you!

January 2010

The DOE Data Explorer is beginning the new year with an enhancement to its search functionality. Radio buttons now appear with both the basic search and the advanced search. The default is set for the radio button that indicates you wish to search for "individual words." This is the default because it has been the type of search available since DDE was launched in June of 2008. If you wish, however, to click the radio button that allows you to search for an "exact phrase," you will be using the new addition to the search functionality. The basic search on the home page will return only those records that have that exact phrase (in that exact order) in any field. The advanced search allows you to search for your exact phrase in just the title, if you wish, or to search for it in the full record (basic search mode).

The help text has also been updated to include not only information on the exact phrase search, but information on the most recently added database fields: Host Website, Registration Required, and Special Interface.

June 2009

The DOE Data Explorer added ten new citations during the month of June. Five of these citations guide users to image libraries on Flickr. Several DOE National Laboratories are now using Flickr as the vehicle for making their image libraries available to the public. The libraries are organized into sets, making it easier to separate scientific images from images of facilities and people. Tags are also a powerful way to find the scientific images. Once at the Flickr "home page" for a particular lab, click TAGS, and then click on terms such as "physics" to find all the images that have been "tagged" with that keyword.

The ten records added in June to the DDE database are:

The ALEXIS satellite was launched in April of 1993 by Los Alamos National Laboratory as an experiment in operating and rescuing a satellite and as a way to test techniques and technologies that might be used in future space missions. One of the payloads on the ALEXIS was the Blackbeard Radio Experiment/Project. Blackbeard captured transient radio impluses that came to be known as Trans-Ionospheric Pulse Pairs (TIPP). The Blackbeard experiment has been superceded by the Los Alamos FORTE satellite, but the Blackbeard home page still provides access to some of the images and data plots from the mid-1990s. Citation DDE00246 has been added to the DOE Data Explorer to help you find this older information.
