Data Activities and Publications
OSTI has participated in several arenas with interests related to access, preservation, and management of primary research data, including interagency working groups, working groups within DOE, and groups related to data management across the international scientific community. Several have issued publications dealing with scientific data.
- Data-Related STIP Activities
The DOE Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP) is administered by OSTI. DOE O 241.1B recognized non-text types of scientific and technical information (STI) to be announced by OSTI. DOE sites will submit metadata only for non-text items that are determined to have significant STI content. Videos, datasets, image libraries, etc., will remain at the host site but will be made available via links in OSTI database records. Best practices are being developed by STIP working groups.
- Workshop on Scientific Data Management
Harnessing the Power of Digital Data: Taking the Next Step, March 2011
The purpose of the Workshop on Scientific Data Management (SDM) for Government Agencies (June 29–July 1, 2010) was to provide a forum for federal practitioners of SDM to share best practices in data management policy and planning. Practitioners at the workshop included researchers, science managers, policy analysts, operational users, and data managers. The workshop was sponsored by CENDI, EPA, and IWGDD and was intended to build upon the previous IWGDD report.
- Interagency Working Group on Digital Data (IWGDD)
Harnessing the Power of Digital Data for Science and Society, January 2009
The DOE Office of Science participates in this working group of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) Committee on Science, in which OSTI served as representative from 2006-2009. The IWGDD was initially charted to “develop and promote the implementation of a strategic plan for the federal government to cultivate an open, interoperable framework to ensure reliable preservation and effective access to digital data for research, development, and education in science, technology, and engineering.” The group is now re-chartered as an interagency working group under NTSC's sub-committee of the Committee of Science.
OSTI joined DataCite to facilitate finding, accessing and revising publicly available scientific research datasets produced by the U.S. Department of Energy funded researchers. OSTI provides the DOI registration service to DOE-funded researchers at DOE national laboratories, facilities, and grantees at universities and other institutions.
- International Council for Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI)
Ad hoc Strategic Coordinating Committee on Information and Data , April 2011 (Pre-Publication Report)
ICSTI is a forum where organizations that create, disseminate and use scientific and technical information in many different countries can work together on common issues. OSTI represents the Department of Energy in ICSTI, joining other U.S. and international organizations.
- DOE Data Centers
The State of Data Management in the DOE Research and Development Complex, November 2004 (172-KB PDF)
A workshop facilitated by OSTI was held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, in July 2004. The event was called "DOE Data Centers: Preparing for the Future" and was attended by directors or key staff from DOE Data Centers.
