| Abstract | Almost a year after World War II ended, Congress established the United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to foster and control the peacetime development of atomic science and technology. The history includes the first Commission, the nuclear arsenal, organizing the National Laboratories, reactor development, atoms for peace, The Atomic Energy Act of 1954, the Five Year Plan, cooperation with industry, international participation, weapon testing and fallout, the limited test ban treaty, civilian power and the proliferation of the peaceful atom in the sixties, private ownership legislation, the Breeder Reactor, licensing and regulation, research, applied technology, nonnuclear research, and reactor safety. | |
