DescriptionThe Y-12 National Security Complex is part of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), an independent organization within the Department of Energy. The Complex was constructed as part of the Manhatten Project in World War II and serves the country in areas of defense and nuclear nonproliferation and in support of other, related federal agency programs. An example of the latter would be the Navy's reactors.

Because of its long involvement in the Manhattan Project, the founding and growth of Oak Ridge when it was nicknamed the Secret City, the Cold War era, and current programs for peaceful use of the atom, the Y-12 galleries for photos, videos, and audio materials are of great historical interest. A good place to begin is the Oral Histories Gallery at http://www.y12.doe.gov/about/history/oral_histories/. From there, go to the search interface for the photo gallery at http://www.y12.doe.gov/about/history/photo_gallery.php and visit the video gallery at http://www.y12.doe.gov/about/history/video.php.
