DescriptionThe NGDRS is a system of geoscience data repositories, providing information about their respective holdings accessible through a web-based supercatalog. The catalog lists the holdings of participating public and private geoscience data repositories. Much of the data provided through the catalog is metadata, however, where the participating repository sees fit, online data access is possible. The goal of the supercatalog is to provide users information about the vast holdings of geoscience data, the quality, quantity, and location of that data, as well as general information about the attribute fields of the data.[Copied from NGDRS home page at http://www.agiweb.org/ngdrs/index.html] The website provides a Directory of Repositories that can be browsed state by state. Information as to the holdings in that state were collected by the American Geological Institute in 1996. Holdings represented may be digital, in paper, on microfiche or microfilm, or may be actual drill core samples, cuttings, etc. Each repository in each state provides information on how its holdings may be accessed. Some are available, particularly the offline holdings, only after payment but many others are free. The goal is identify the data to the user, make it available where possible, and ensure its preservation.
