Title: Deuterium isotope separation by ir single-photon induced reactions

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7334392

Laser separation of deuterium may apparently be achieved by infrared-catalyzed addition of deuterium halides to olefins in the gas phase. Excellent DX spectral coincidences exist with CO laser transitions, which selectively excite the v = 1 vibrational level in DCl, DBr or DI. The holmium-YAG laser can also be used to directly excite the DI v = 3 vibrational level with a single photon. Activation energies for hydrogen halide addition to olefins may be selected in the range 10-40 Kcal/mole. Overall quantum efficiencies of these processes appear to be of practical significance.
