The precipitation of [gamma]-Fe precipitates in Cu-rich Cu-Fe alloys has been studied extensively by different experimental methods to analyze the martensitic transformation of [gamma]-Fe into [alpha]-Fe. Another point of interest is related to the Ostwald ripening of [gamma]-Fe precipitates in Cu-Fe alloys. Several works by TEM have reported that the coarsening of [gamma]-Fe precipitates follows the LSW theory of thermally activated growth. Moreover, an interfacial free energy of 0.3 J m[sup [minus]2] has been reported for a lattice misfit, between coherent [gamma]-Fe precipitates and matrix, of about 1.25% in Cu-0.43, 0.56 and 2.6 at. % Fe alloys. However, this value of interfacial energy seems to be higher than the expected one for the reported lattice misfit, since the smaller lattice misfit, the lower interfacial energy of the precipitate-matrix interface and for instance, the interfacial free energy of coherent cobalt precipitates in Cu-rich Cu-Co alloy has been reported to be 0.23 J m[sup [minus]2] for a lattice misfit of 1.8%. The purpose of this study is to characterize the Ostwald ripening of [gamma]-Fe precipitates in a Cu-1.5 at. % Fe alloy using the high magnification of a Field Ion Microscope, FIM.
