It is maintained that the recent report of the existence of H/sup 2 -/ (Schnitzer and Anbar, J. Chem. Phys. 64, 2466 (1976)) can be interpreted as arising from electron attachment and detachment collisions of the H beam ions with the background gas. (AIP)
