Title: Cosurfactants in micellar systems used for tertiary oil recovery

Conference ·
OSTI ID:7216003

Micellar slugs were composed of surfactant (ammonium petroleum sulfonate or sodium sulfonate), hydrocarbon, water, electroyte and alcohol which serves as a cosurfactant. Relationships between cosurfactant concentration and slug phase behavior, hydrocarbon and brine solubility, electrolyte concentration, viscosity and electrical conductivity were presented. In high water content microemulsions, water-insoluble alcohols often produce high slug viscosities, permitting mobility control. Cosurfactants also reduce adsorption of the micellar slug on reservoir rock. By adjusting the type and concentration of alcohol, the micellar system can be somewhat tailored to accommodate a particular reservoir brine.
