Title: Some substitutional chemistry in known ternary and quaternary chalcogenides. [Ta/sub 2/Ni/sub 3/S/sub 8/, Ta/sub 2/Pt/sub 3/Se/sub 8/, and Co/sub 2/Nb/sub 4/PdSe/sub 12/]

Journal Article · · J. Solid State Chem.; (United States)

New ternary and quaternary transition-metal chalcogenides have resulted from substitutional chemistry of known phases. Ta/sub 2/Ni/sub 3/S/sub 8/ and Ta/sub 2/Pt/sub 3/Se/sub 8/ have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray techniques. These compounds adopt the Nb/sub 2/Pd/sub 3/Se/sub 8/ structural type. Hence in Ta/sub 2/Ni/sub 3/S/sub 8/ Ni occupies both square-planar and square-pyramidal sites as similarly does Pt in Ta/sub 2/Pt/sub 3/Se/sub 8/. The electrical conductivity of Ta/sub 2/Ni/sub 3/S/sub 8/ establishes its semiconducting behavior. Ta has been substituted for Nb in the Nb/sub 2/Pd/sub 0.71/Se/sub 5/ type to yield Ta/sub 2/Pd/sub 0.89/S/sub 5/ which has been characterized by single crystal X-ray techniques. The square-planar Pd sites in the van der Waals' gap of this layer structure are 78.6(4)% occupied. This compound shows metallic behavior. The compound Co/sub 2/Nb/sub 4/PdSe/sub 12/ has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray techniques. It is of the Co/sub 2/Ta/sub 4/PdSe/sub 12/ structural type and thus contains Nb in both trigonal prismatic and octahedral sites.
