Redundant computer SCADA system
Piedmont Natural Gas, headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., serves more than 320,000 residential, commercial, and industrial gas customers in 65 communities through 340 miles of gas transmission pipelines and 6,400 miles of gas distribution mains. The service area stretches across the Piedmont region of North and South Carolina and into the Nashville, Tenn, area. Initially, system control was handled by pulse duration modulation telemetering. Piedmont began to computerize in 1974 and by 1978 had a fully computerized SCADA system. That first system was a Super Compiler, supplied by QEI Inc., which provided Piedmont with accurate measurement, dependable control, and system security. After 10 years of operation, Piedmont's system requirements had outgrown the Super Compiler and it became apparent that the SCADA system should be upgraded. Piedmont decided to replace all master station equipment with a modern system.
