Method of employing a coated elastomeric packing element
This patent describes a method of providing a sealing surface for a packer to be set in a subterranean well in association with the tubing string for sealing the well bore to isolate the annulus between the well bore and the tubing string above the packer from that portion of the well bore below the packer. The method comprising the steps of: providing the packer with a radially expandable tubular body member; coating over at least the major exposed exterior surfaces of the tubular body member with a continuous imperforate elastomeric coating; running the packer in the well bore to a position proximate a predeterminable location; and setting the packer whereby the tubular body member is allowed to swell by permeation through the coating to provide optimum sealing subsequent to setting of the packer.
