Energy handbook: second edition. [Contains glossary]
During the five years since the publication of the first edition of this handbook in 1978, two major developments have altered the outlook on energy. The first was the decision in 1979 by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries to raise the price of petroleum once again, this time by a factor of three (from about $12 to $34 a barrel). The second was related to the first. In response to the 1979 price increase in petroleum, as well as the earlier 1973 price increase, efforts to conserve energy and to use it more efficiently were intensively pursued in most energy-importing countries. The extensive revisions incorporated in this second edition reflect the changes and developments that have occurred since 1978. The most significant of these have taken place in energy consumption and energy projections, the data for which reveal a significant reduction in the demand for energy and lowered expectations for future demand. The chapters on the various energy technologies illustrate the progress that has been made, but, at the same time, indicate that this progress has been incremental rather than dramatic. During the past five years, the environmental aspects of energy production and utilization have received much attention, as has the development of environmental control technologies. The data in the chapters on these subjects has therefore been considerably modified. Energy costs have been especially volatile during the past five years because of fluctuations in the rate of inflation, interest rates, and the price of crude oil. The chapter on energy costs has thus been changed to a more general consideration of economics. Finally, a number of new energy plans have been added to the last chapter. It is apparent, however, that less public attention is being given to comprehensive energy plans now than in the mid-seventies.
