Title: Additional pressure drop experienced by a fluid during its passage through a cylinder incurred by the presence of a spherical droplet

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)

Knowledge of the pressure drop accompanying the motion of droplets suspended in a tube flow is relevant to emulsion viscosity, the flow of emulsions, blood flow, and capillary tube rheology. A general expression is derived for the additional pressure drop, experienced by the continuous fluid during its passage through a circular cylinder as a result of the presence of an eccentrically positioned, nonneutrally or neutrally buoyant, spherical liquid droplet or gas bubble. This pressure drop is in excess of that due to the original parabolic field. The principal results of this study have not been given previously. Various particular cases may be derived from the general equation for the additional pressure drop. (10 refs.)
