Title: State-of-the-art report on monitoring, prevention and mitigation of microbiologically influenced corrosion in the natural gas industry. Topical report, May 1986-September 1990

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7047874

The report presents a critical review of the methods for monitoring, prevention and mitigation of microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in the natural gas industry. Sampling methods and procedures are presented for several different types of samples (liquids, corrosion products, soils and surface associated materials) and analyses (biological, chemical and metallurgical). Monitoring methods involving biological, chemical, metallurgical and electrochemical methods are described and evaluated for their usefulness in the natural gas industry. Traditional methods as well as newer, and some experimental, techniques are discussed. Mitigation and prevention strategies including coatings, cathodic protection, mechanical cleaning and chemical treatments are reviewed, giving specific examples to illustrate their efficacy or lack thereof, in various natural gas industry environments. Systems and devices for testing mitigation measures are also discussed.
