In order to study the possibility of selective isomerization of ethylbenzene into xylenes (with low yields of products of disproportionation of the xylenes formed), the authors compare the activities and selectivities of platinum catalysts containing decationated forms of TsVM, a zeolite of the pentasil type, and of mordenite, in isomerization of ethylbenzene under hydrogen pressure. The degrees of ethylbenzene conversion on the platinum catalyst containing HTsVM and on the platinum catalyst containing H-mordenite were similar, but the compositions of the products differed sharply. Data which reflect these findings are presented.
