Utility electric power systems generally supply electric power of acceptable quality. It is, however, reasonable to assume that electric power from a single source will have interruptions that most of the customers can tolerate with some inconvenience but without any significant damage. Some customer loads cannot tolerate interruptions in electric supply. For such loads, standby and emergency power systems are installed to provide electric power of acceptable quality and quantity to critical portions or all of the user facilities in event of failure of normal electric supply. It is clear that the objective of a standby and emergency system is to enhance the reliability of electric supply. Therefore, its choice depends on the outage frequency and duration of utility supply as well as reliability and affordability requirements. In general, the provision of higher reliability means an increase in the cost of acquisition. This cost needs to be balanced with the cost of interruption to the customer. Therefore, for proper selection, methods of reliability calculation and of reliability worth are both important. The objective of this paper is to present a methodology for reliability calculations using the example of standby generators and uninterruptible power supply systems. The techniques presented are, however, quite general and can be used for other configurations as well.
