Title: How to control differential pipe sticking. Part 4. Economic methods to avoid or free stuck pipe

Journal Article · · Pet. Eng. Int.; (United States)

Prevention of stuck drill string via rental of spiral collars and use of low-water-loss muds is less costly than remedial efforts after sticking occurs. After sticking occurs and spotting fluids fail to release the pipe, the next step is to attempt washover and to recover the stuck section by physically grinding and destroying the filter-cake bond. Field experience shows, however, that in many cases the drill string is stuck throughout the section below the initial stuck interval. If so, the drilling supervisor must compare the estimated costs of recovering pipe by washover with those of redrilling the entire interval in a sidetracked hole.
