Title: Characterization: Why, how, and what have we learned

The Bechtel Oak Ridge office has been involved in more than 60 projects involving some aspect of decontamination and/or decommissioning technologies. These projects have included efforts from initial characterization through conceptual planning and detailed design to field implementation and final site release. This paper describes the requirements for obtaining a characterization data base and the significance the characterization effort has on the remainder of the decontamination and decommissioning D D process.
