Energy transition in developing countries. [Contains glossary]
Analyses of the energy issues and experience gained by the World Bank and its member countries in the energy sector show that the Bank's activities have expanded substantially since 1979. Energy lending has more than doubled, including a nearly four-fold increase in the financing of oil and gas projects. The Bank also worked with over 30 countries to assess their major energy problems. This report indicates that the Bank should continue to give high priority to energy in its overall lending program. Financing by the Bank plays an important catalytic role by attracting private sector investors and lenders to participate in the projects. The Bank also plays a role in borrowing countries in the areas of policy advice, institutional strengthening, technology transfer, and improved project selection, design and implementation. 26 references, 4 figures, 44 tables.
