FCC (fluid catalytic cracker) power recovery train saves $18 million at the Sun Petroleum Products Co. Toledo, Ohio, Refinery, according to Ingersoll-Rand Co., the power recovery system supplier. This estimate is based over a five-year period on the difference between annual net power costs for the power recovery system and the annual estimated power costs for a steam-turbine-driven air compressor for the unit. The power train consists of a 21,500 hp Ingersoll-Rand gas expander Model E-148 operating on hot flue gas from catalyst regeneration after removing catalyst fines but before feeding to the carbon monoxide boilers, a 15 stage axial flow Ingersoll-Rand air compressor, an 8000 hp Westinghouse motor/generator, and an 8500 hp General Electric steam turbine driver which is used to bring the generator and air compressor up to rated speed until the turboexpander is brought up to full power output, coupled together on a common baseplate and foundation and served by a common lubrication system. The organization and function of the system and its components are discussed.
