German KTB project technologies overcome deep drilling challenges
- Geological Survey of Lower Saxony, Hannover (Germany)
The German Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) is a non-commercial, geoscientific research project that is part of the international lithosphere research program. The goals are to investigate the physical and chemical conditions and processes of the earth's deep continental crust. The well site is in a suture-zone of two continental plates in the north-eastern part of Bavaria near the town of Windischeschenbach. Two wells are included in the project-pilot hole KTB Oberpfalz VB and the ultradeep KTB Oberpfalz HB. A field lab at the well site enables measurements on cuttings, core samples and drilling muds to be made immediately after recovery. A considerable amount of research has been conducted in drilling and borehole measurement technology to support the project.
