Environmental Readiness Document: buildings and community systems. Fiscal year 1980
This Environmental Readiness Document was prepared to assist DOE in evaluating the commercial readiness of six Buildings and Community Systems technologies, with respect to environmental issues. These technologies include: Stirling/Rankine Heat Pump; lighting efficiency technology; integrated appliances, occupancy detector-based ventilation controls; integrated community energy systems; and urban waste technology. Each technology and expectations for its future utilization are described. The environmental concerns associated with each technology, the current status of knowledge about each concern and its potential seriousness and manageability through regulation and control technology are examined. Summarized are present and projected societal capabilities to reduce and control undesirable environmental, health, safety, and related social impacts to a level of public acceptability - as reflected in current and proposed environmental standards - which will allow the technology to be commercialized and utilized in a timely manner. It is concluded that, based on available information, there do not appear to be any major environmental barriers to the continued development and demonstration of any of these technologies. (LCL)
