Title: The determination of the hydroxyl and carboxylic acid content of coal macerals using combined chemical and spectroscopic techniques

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6791745

Macerals were separated from two high volatile bituminous coals obtained from the Argonne Premium Coal Sample Program and one high volatile bituminous coal from the Pennsylvania State University Coal Sample Bank. A preliminary survey of the nature of these macerals using chemical and spectroscopic techniques are reported. Alkylation using /sup 13/C enriched methyl iodide followed by solid /sup 13/C NMR analysis were used to determine the concentrations of acidic OH and CH sites in these macerals. The relative quantities of various types of methyl ethers and methyl esters were also estimated from the NMR spectra. 19 refs., 4 figs., 4 tabs.
