A review covers processes and equipment for removal of free, mechanically dispersed, chemically emulsified or dissolved oils from refinery effluents; the purification petroleum refinery wastewaters with coagulants and flocculants; the use of dissolved air flotation with polyelectrolyte coagulation for removal of emulsified oil recovered from petroleum wastewater by separators; electrochemical treatment of petroleum refining wastewater by using electrolytically insoluble anodes; studies on the use of biological treatment methods, e.g., activated sludge, for petrochemical industrial waste loads; a method for measuring hydrocarbon emissions by air stripping during aeration of oil refinery wastewater; the use of C/sub 2/-C/sub 10/ fatty acids, neutralized with ammonium hydroxide, as effective demulsifiers for treatment of oil contaminated wastewaters; a method for determining the relative environmental impact of alternative coal conversion processes; the determination of the contaminants released to ground waters as a result of underground gasification of lignite coal; the use of reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration to reduce concentrations of phenolic compounds in wastewaters from a Lurgi coal gasification plant; and several other related topics.
