Trends in energy: Housing and energy experts talk affordability
Meeting in Washington, D.C., at a conference sponsored by the Alliance to Save Energy, over 200 energy and housing officials discussed the critical role of energy efficiency in the affordable housing market. From October 4-6, 1989, utility representatives, lenders, contractors, and energy advocates discussed new policy initiatives that would spur greater investment in low- and moderate-income housing. The audience was asked to respond to five housing policies proposed by the Alliance, a non-profit coalition of business, government, and consumer leaders involved in energy conservation. The five policies are: a national energy-efficient mortgage policy governing Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA and VA loans; upgraded energy standards for federally subsidized housing; national energy ratings, or labels of homes; energy-efficient incentives in housing assistance programs; and programs to reduce energy costs in public housing.
