New type of engine fuel antioxidant. [PMA M-2 additive]
The oxidation of engine fuels by atmospheric oxygen is a consecutive process, from the most reactive to the least reactive compounds. Hence the fuel as a whole can obviously be''protected'' from oxidation over a certain period of time by an extremely small quantity of an additive that is more susceptible to oxidation than is the least stable component of the fuel. Such an additive must not have an adverse effect on the service properties of the fuel, and the products from the oxidation of the fuel must be completely fuel soluble and also must not have any adverse effect on the fuel's service properties. Additives of this type are termed ''shielding'' additives. This paper presents results of an experimental study which was carried out in order to determine whether such ''protection'' is possible from an additive such as a copolymer of esters of methacrylic acid and C/sub 8/-C/sub 12/ straight-chain monohydric alcohols with 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine. This copolymer (molecular weight about 5000), which is designated PMA M-2, is readily soluble in petroleum products. It is recommended as an additive to improve the viscosity properties of lube oils and the thermal stability of fuels. It is demonstrated by experimental data performed with dervel and antioxidative fuels that PMA M-2 additive through its own oxidation, prevents the atmospheric oxidation of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons (engine fuels) in the liquid phase. 6 refs.
