Photodisintegration of the deuteron by linearly polarized photons below the pion-production threshold
Measurements are reported of the asymmetry in the photodisintegration of the deuteron by 50--100 MeV linearly polarized photons at proton emission angles of 45/sup 0/, 60/sup 0/, and 90/sup 0/ in the center of mass system. The measurements are in good agreement with other experimental data for theta/sup *//sub p/ = 90/sup 0/, but do not confirm previous measurements at theta/sup *//sub p/ = 45/sup 0/. The measured asymmetry at theta/sup *//sub p/ = 60/sup 0/ is reported for the first time. The asymmetry values obtained in these measurements are in good agreement with the predictions of the standard model in which additional contributions due to meson exchange and nucleon structure have been taken into account, and the wave functions employed include a large contribution due to the deuteron D-wave.
