Foam rheology: the linear viscoelastic response of a spatially periodic model

Foam is considered to be a dispersion of gas cells in a continuous network of thin liquid films. The interfacial properties that are essential to foam stability are equally important to foam rheology. This is illustrated by the linear viscoelastic response of a model foam. Spatially periodic models of foam rheology have provided insight into the cell-level mechanisms that are responsible for such properties as a finite shear modulus, yield stress, non-Newtonian viscosity, normal stresses, and shear strength. The analysis described here extends previous work by considering several new features: linear viscoelastic behavior, Gibbs' elasticity, and interfacial viscosity.
