MOD-2 on line
The opening of the first megawatt (actually 7.5 megawatt potential) wind farm in Goodnoe Hills, Washington, is described. Three massive (300 foot rotors) MOD-2 wind machines were put into service on May 29, 1981 and generate enough power to service 2000 homes. Major innovations over previous projects (MOD-0, MOD-0A, and MOD-1) are described briefly and include: (1) controlling the load on the blades by feathering the tips only; (2) use of a soft steel shell tower; (3) use of a compact, light gearbox; and (4) teetering the rotor at the hub to reduce loads on the turbine. The rotor, generator, drive train and tower are described as well as electrical connections, fabrication, operation, and spacing of the MOD-2 wind machines. The collection of data and testing of the wind machines are described. Plans for future developments of wind projects in the area are outlined. (MJJ)
