Title: Saturated pool and flow boiling from horizontal cylinders

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6613836

A study of pool and flow boiling from heated horizontal cylinders at atmospheric pressure is presented. Pool boiling heat flux vs. wall superheat boiling curves were obtained for 3.18-mm brass tubes heated by an internal flow of ethylene glycol. These curves were obtained in saturated Freon-113, n-pentane, acetone, benzene, ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol. Temperature limitations prevented operation in the film-boiling regime for all liquids except methanol. The methanol experiments clearly show that there are two transition boiling curves, one of which is obtained upon heating from nucleate boiling, the other upon cooling from film boiling. Pool and flow boiling curves were measured for 1.590, 3.18-, and 4.75-mm convectively heated cylinders in saturated acetone and isopropanol. Pool and flow boiling burnout data were also obtained for DC heated nichrome wires and thin walled stainless steel tubes in saturated water. The heaters ranged from 0.38 to 2.12 mm in diameter. In low-velocity flow boiling, large vapor bubbles break off from the wake with a regular frequency. The characteristic frequency of bubble breakoff was measured for all the test cylinders in all the test liquids.
