The Environmental Sciences Division (ESD) of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) conducts research on the environmental aspects of existing and emerging energy systems and applies this information to ensure that technology development and energy use are consistent with national environmental health and safety goals. ESD performs basic and applied research, environmental assessments, environmental engineering and demonstration, technology and operational support, and program management for the US Department of Energy (DOE), other federal and state agencies, and industry. ESD works collaboratively with a number of federal agencies, universities, and the private sector in accomplishing its programs. The Division offers an interdisciplinary resource of staff and facilities to address complex environmental problems. ESD is currently providing technical leadership for major environmental issues of national concern: (1) acidic deposition and related environmental effects, (2) the global carbon cycle and the effects of increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO/sub 2/ and the resulting climatic changes on ecosystems and natural and physical resources, (3) hazardous chemical and radioactive waste disposal R and D, and (4) development of commercial biomass energy production systems. In addition, ESD also manages DOE's Carbon Dioxide Information Center. This progress report outlines ESD's accomplishments in these and other areas in FY 1986.
