Electrostatic-precipitator reference manual. Final report
This manual is designed to familiarize the reader with the application of electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) to the collection of fly ash produced by steam boilers in the electric power industry. It is intended to be used by utility engineers who have had little or no previous background or experience in the control of fly ash emissions. The report summarizes the history and theory of electrostatic precipitation and contains an outline of steam boilers and their production of fly ash. The chemical and physical properties of fly ash are discussed in depth with emphasis upon the effects of these properties upon ESP performance. Practical guides for the selection of ESP design and size are given, along with examples of commercial and technical aspects of equipment specifications. Sections are included covering the construction, operation, and maintenance of ESPs. Special attention is given to operating and performance problem diagnostics (trouble-shooting). The report concludes with a discussion of future trends in the design and application of ESPs to electric generating plants. The manual is published in loose-leaf format to facilitate its updating as additional material on the state-of-the-art becomes available. Its organization and emphasis are the result of its writers' many years of practical experience with ESPs. Its content is mainly derived from the voluminous literature on the subject indicated in the reference list. The initial effort coordinates and/or references some twenty EPRI research projects and ninety other published books and papers. This manual will be supplemented by guidelines which deal specifically with: (1) ESP sizing and design; (2) ESP detail specifications; (3) ESP trouble-shooting; and (4) ESP upgrading. 53 figures, 2 tables.
