Ecological characterization of the central and northern California coastal regtion. Volume II, Part 1. Regional characterization
The volume serves two purposes. First, it is a transition between the basic concepts and models described in Volume I and the more specific information found in the rest of the volumes. It applies these basic concepts to the central and northern coastal California study area. Secondly, it provides an overview of the environmental setting of the study area. The wide diversity of the study area is revealed in discussions on climatic conditions; geology and soils; land use and population distribution; plants, animals and their habitats; economic and employment conditions; resources, and many other topics. All of the important physical-chemical features and processes that form, control, or influence the central and northern California coastal region are outlined. Major topics included geological, physical, and chemical oceanography; estuarine processes; hydrology and water quality; climatology and air quality; and geology and seismology. Models of each of the major kinds of systems are used - marine, estuarine, riverine, lacustrine (lakes), palustrine (shallow ponds), and terrestrial - to characterize the biological environment of the study area. Each model shows the interrelationships among physical-chemical, biological, and socio-economic features and processes. Emphasis has been placed on the physical factors that control or influence biological features and processes. Important species and areas of ecological concern are identified. Important socio-economic features of the northern and central California coast are described, including forestry and forest products, fisheries, recreation, transportation and energy utilities, service activities, social and cultural features, and land use.
