A method is described for forming a chemical plug in the more permeable zones of a subterranean formation of nonuniform permeability. There is injected into the formation aqueous solutions of a polymer and a material that reacts with the polymer to form a plug. This is followed by aqueous solutions of an alkali metal silicate and a material that reacts with the silicate to form a silicate-containing plug. (34 claims)
