Database assessment of the health and environmental effects of munition production waste products. Final report
This review provides information on several aspects of the waste problem connected with the manufacture of the munitions 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene or alpha-TNT, hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX), and octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX). The objectives included: identifying those munition production wastes having the greatest potential for causing adverse health and environmental effects; providing the Army with a data base that will support future decision-making processes concerning additional delistings from RCRA requirements; and beginning the examination of the rationale for the selection of efficient methods of disposal of munition production wastes. The document includes the following: the physical and chemical properties of the primary munition compounds and some associated compounds, the manufacturing processes and production statistics for the Army ammunition plants, the metabolism and health effects in humans and test animals, the environmental fate and effects, and current and experimental waste treatment procedures. 181 references, 15 figures, 91 tables.
