Demonstration of extracellular alkane solubilizing factor produced by (Endomycopsis lipolytica) YM. [Endomycopsis lipolytica]
The activity of hydrocarbon emulsifying and solubilizing (ES) polymer produced by Pseudomonas PG-1 was found to be highly stable. It was thought that the solubilizing factor might be stabilized and protected through absorption-adsorption on the matrix of the polymer. It was considered possible that addition of such a polymer which has no solubilizing property for a particular hydrocarbon could stabilize the solubilizing factor produced by E. lipolytica YM specific for that particular hydrocarbon. The production of a n-octadecane solubilizing factor by E. lipolytica YM is not only demsonstrated directly but the isolation of the factor is achieved along with the added polymer. It was also shown that the octadecane solubilization rate during growth far exceeded the actual rate of n-octadecane uptake by the organism. The isolated n-octadecane solubilizing factor produced by E. lipolytica YM was further shown to stimulate the utilization of n-octadecane by the mutant strain E. lipolytica UM which normally could not utilize n-alkanes.
