The Synfuels Handbook is divided into four sections: (1) Introduction to the US Synthetic Fuels Program; (2) Synfuels Process Technologies Through Time; (3) US Government-Funded Synthetic Fuels Research; and (4) Yellow Pages of Synfuels. The synthetic fuels relate to coal gasification, coal liquefaction, and oil shale. The coal gasification includes all aspects of conversion of coal to low-Btu gas or synthetic natural gas by methanation processes on laboratory scale, process development units, pilot plants or demonstration projects; also included are studies on in situ gasification. Coal liquefaction includes all studies on conversion of coal into oil, gasoline, diesel and other liquid products by hydrogenation, pyrolysis, or solvent extraction on laboratory scale, process development units, pilot plants or demonstration projects. Oil shale includes all studies on mining, surface retorting, in situ processing and utilization of oil shale for improvement of resource recovery and minimizing environmental impact and water requirements. Information for the various projects includes policies, process development, materials, production, mining and environment. (DP)
