Title: Condensation of flute waves into vortices in a finite-pressure plasma with shear

The formation of vortex solitons is favored by energy considerations in the plasma of a toroidal magnetic confinement system, in regions with unfavorable curvature. These vortices move across the magnetic field at the electron drift velocity, so that the electrons in a vortex are insensitive to the magnetic shear. The energy of the vortices has a negative minimum for certain values of the parameters in this study. The vortices are sustained at the energy minimum by dissipation. They give rise to convection of the plasma. The convective transport coefficients are calculated.
