Cap retainer for hydraulic lash adjuster
This patent describes a hydraulic lash adjuster of the valve gear of an internal combustion engine comprising: a generally cylindrical body defining an outwardly opening blind bore oriented along the longitudinal axis thereof; a plunger assembly including a rod portion slidable received in the bore, and end portion extending outwardly from the body, and a shank portion disposed intermediate the rod and end portions, the rod and shank portion having characteristic nominal diameters of D/sub r/ and D/sub s/, respectively, the end portion defining a bulbous tipped pivot surface adapted to contact associated engine valve gear components and, having a maximum diameter of D/sub e/, wherein D/sub r/ and D/sub e/ substantially exceed D/sub s/. The plunger assembly defining, in cooperation with the blind end of the bore, a cavity, the plunger assembly including means defining a fluid reservoir and one-way valve means permitting fluid flow from the reservoir to the cavity, the body including port means adapted for receiving fluid under pressure therein. The body and plunger assembly coating to define a fluid passage communicating with the port means and providing exclusive fluid communication therefrom with the reservoir, the passage defining means including a fluid metering means defining a substantially constant length annular metering orifice between the rod portion and the body bore for continuously metering the fluid flow into the fluid reservoir, the annular metering orifice being effective for causing a substantial pressure drop thereacross, the plunger assembly further including means defining a second fluid passage and providing exclusive fluid communication from the reservoir means to the pivot surface.
