Exploration of the possibility of employing ultrasonic radiation to sensitize a bubble chamber

Experiments were initiated to explore the possibilities of using an ultrasonically excited liquid as a bubble chamber. Various liquids were studied (water, water saturated with CO2, isopentane, isopentane with dissolved ethylene). The ultrasonic radiation was provided by quartz and barium titanate transducers covering a range from 10 to 500 kc. The ionizing radiation included x-rays, beta rays, from radioactive isotopes, and nuclei knocked-on by neutrons of energy 10 to 23 mev. In practically every case, the ordinary cavitation produced in the liquid by ultrasonic radiation masked the effect, if any, that could be caused by the ionizing radiation.
