Title: Precision measurement of R = sigma/sub L//sigma/sub T/ and F/sub 2/ in deep inelastic electron scattering on deuterium and iron targets

We report new results on a precision measurement of the ratio R = sigma/sub L//sigma/sub T/ from deuterium, iron and gold targets, on the ratio sigma/sup F//sup e//sigma/sup D/ and on the structure function F/sub 2/, for deep inelastic electron-nucleus scattering in the range 0.2less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.5 and 1less than or equal toQ/sup 2/less than or equal to10(GeV/c)/sup 2/. We find no difference between R/sup F//sup e/ and R/sup d/. Our results show, for first time, a clear falloff of R with increasing Q/sup 2/ at SLAC energies. Our R and F/sub 2/ results are in good agreement with QCD predictions only when corrections for target mass effects are included.
