Three major trenchless rehabilitation projects were completed in five weeks by Boston Gas and Miller Pipeline Corp. with the new AMEX 2000 lining system. AMEX 2000 was chosen because it had several advantages over other lining processes which benefited Boston Gas. Some currently available processes do not guarantee against migration of gas between the inside wall of the pipe and the outside wall of the liner. AMEX liners bond fully and directly to the pipe to seal the main over its entire length, thus eliminating gas movement outside the liner. This sealing action allows a pressure upgrade of the line. Also, future service connections can be tapped in the conventional manner without need for special equipment or fittings, as required by other lining systems. This paper reviews the performance and installation procedures of these three installations. Advantages include: (1) only small access excavations are necessary for installing AMEX liners, (2) continuous lengths of main up to 500 ft. can be lined as well as bends up to 90 degrees, and (3) assurance of excellent flow characteristics due to the low friction surface of the poly-urethane line. Tests have shown that AMEX 2000 helps protect a main from cracking and corrosion.
