The catalytic behavior of V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/ catalysts prepared by the contemporaneous precipitation of vanadium and titanium oxides was tested in the reaction of toluene ammoxidation to benzonitrile. Generally, two kinds of vanadia species are formed on these catalysts: a vanadia species strongly interacting with the TiO/sub 2/ (insoluble in a basic medium) and soluble bulk vanadium oxide, which does not interact with the support. The relative amounts of the two species depend on the crystalline structure of the TiO/sub 2/. In particular, the latter species is prevalent in V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/ (rutile) catalysts, while the former predominates in V/sub 2/O/sub 5//TiO/sub 2/ (anatase) catalysts.
