Title: Aspects of the history of 66095 based on trace elements in clasts and whole rock

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6372268

Large fractions of Cl and Br associated with separated anorthositic and basaltic clasts and matrix from rusty rock 66095 are soluble in H/sub 2/O. Up to two orders of magnitude variation in concentrations of these elements in the breccia components and varying H/sub 2/O-soluble Cl/Br ratios indicate different sources of volatiles. An approximately constant ratio of the H/sub 2/O to acid soluble Br, i.e. surface deposits vs possibly phosphate related Br, suggests no appreciable alteration in the original distributions of this element. Weak acid leaching dissolved approx. 50% or more of the phosphorus and of the remaining Cl from most of the breccia components. Clast and matrix residues from the leaching steps contain, in most cases, the Cl/P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ ratio found in 66095 whole rock and in a number of other Apollo 16 samples. No dependence on degree of brecciation is indicated. The clasts are typical of Apollo 16 rocks. Matrix leaching results and element concentrations suggest that apatite-whitlockite is a component of KREEP.
